OUYA is the totally new $99 console about to hit the market. It’s a totally hackable android based console with a potentially unlimited amount of free to play games that as of 2013 will be an essential piece of kit for every gaming household. The thing that really gets me thinking and excited is this truly is the first open gaming platform then the potential of this console is incredible. In the late 80’s and early 90’s the competitive console world was at its peak with a new games console being released every couple of months and 1000’s of game developers competing to find the new idea. Since the market got dominated by the big game developers of today like EA and Rockstar the new consoles of today don’t allow for the real competition like they used to, and although have pushed the graphics and capability of the new games they’ve slowed and limited the innovation and creativity behind them. I’m sure some of the great minds behind some of the really interesting games can’t wait to get their hands on this piece of kit. We can see there are already big game designers trying to get there ideas onto this console and I’m sure there will be many more but it’s the smaller company’s like peter molyneuxs (brought us black and white, theme hospital, and the fable series) 22cans that I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
With this being so open, and not only games being available to the masses but hardware as well I think we’re at a gaming crossroads where creativity and innovation will once again carve a new path into the gaming world. Keep tabs on this console because the future is bright for such a fantastic piece of kit.
